We were appointed in 1996 by Percy Williams (Builders) Ltd to produce a design for the renovation and conversion of the old West End Department Stores in Redruth.
This unfortunate building has endured five fires during it's life that has
forced it through many changes. The most recent was in 1985, when the entire
building was gutted due to an electrical failure. The building was a ladies
clothiers and Edwardian in design. This was one of our first major projects in
which we began to use CAD instead of traditional drawing methods, the original
survey work was started on the drawing board but we soon saw the benefits that
the computer can bring to such a job. Clive began the sketches and we
transferred them via scanners to the virtual drawing board. The drawings were
then produced on CAD. Here are some pictures of the building after the fire during which time it was left to the elements due to the roof being missing. It became a very large pigeonier and was boarded off from the outside world due to it's structural weakness. You can see the damage was considerable. These pictures were taken on the handover day, a new life for the building. |
